The allure of edibles is that you can still experience the effects of cannabis without having to smoke flower or vaporize concentrates. It can also offer a tasty culinary experience taking the forms of brownies, chocolate, gummies, sodas, teas and more. And in some cases, it can also be consumed much more discreetly.
Do edibles have different effects?
Edibles enter the body through the mouth and are absorbed through the gut. The absorbed compounds are metabolized in the liver, converting into a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC. 11-Hydroxy-THC, is more potent and can cross the blood-brain barrier more easily than THC that has been inhaled.
This process means the effects may take hours to set in and the potency of effects gradually increases due to the digestive process. The onset of effects may occur as quickly as 20 minutes or as slowly as 3 hours, and the duration can last between 4 and 6 hours.
This is different than smoking cannabis since THC enters your bloodstream directly from your lungs.
What’s a dose?
The potency of an edible product is indicated by the milligrams of cannabinoids contained in the product. In Canada, legal edibles have a maximum amount of 10mg of THC or CBD per package. This means, an entire chocolate bar may have 10 milligrams of THC however depending on the number of pieces, it can be consumed in smaller doses. For example, a chocolate bar divided into 4 pieces will contain 2.5 milligrams per piece.

Will I get high?
Everyone experiences edibles differently since effects can vary depending on your size, age, experience level, stomach contents, gastrointestinal health, and endocannabinoid system function.
The best option for beginners is to go low and slow and read any directions included with your product. It’s important to be patient when consuming edibles. If you aren’t feeling effects yet, or feel like the effects are weak – wait for at least one hour before you consume more otherwise you could be in for a wild ride.
Please remember to consume responsibly and consult a local, licensed retailer for additional product details and information.
